Ground Protection Matting: Everything You Need to Know Before You Buy

Ground protection matting is a broad category that covers a specific problem: getting equipment, vehicles, and people across ground that wasn't designed for the loads being placed on it. Whether that's a construction site access road, a temporary festival path, a stadium turf protection setup, or a pipeline right-of-way crossing — the matting solution is the same category of product, and the selection principles are consistent.

This guide covers everything you need to know about ground protection matting before making a purchasing decision.

What Ground Protection Matting Is — and What It Isn't

Ground protection matting refers to engineered surface panels placed between loads (vehicles, equipment, foot traffic) and the ground beneath. The category includes several material types:

HDPE polymer mats — the current professional standard. Rigid, lightweight, 60–80 ton rated, chemically inert, 10+ year lifespan. Blue Gator O.G. and Lite Mat series.

Timber bog mats — the legacy standard. Heavy (2,000–4,000 lbs), crane-required, rot-prone. Historical use case, declining due to logistics cost.

Steel road plates — high load capacity, hazardous edges, noise issues, best for short-duration paving-adjacent applications.

Composite mats — hybrid wood-polymer products. Less consistent performance than full HDPE; typically lower load ratings.

Rubber mats — viscoelastic deformation under sustained load limits heavy equipment use. Appropriate for light-duty and pedestrian applications.

For serious construction, industrial, oil & gas, and events applications, HDPE matting is the current professional standard. The Blue Gator ground protection mat lineup is the leading HDPE product line in the category.

Ground Protection: The Core Function

Ground protection matting works through load distribution. The mat's job is to take the concentrated load of a tire, track, or equipment foot — typically 40–100 PSI — and spread it across the mat's full surface area, reducing soil contact pressure to 3–10 PSI. This is below the bearing capacity of most soft soils, preventing the rutting, sinkage, and equipment bogging that makes sites unworkable.

Secondary functions of ground protection matting include:

Traction provision — the Gator Grip™ surface maintains slip resistance in wet, icy, and muddy conditions

Surface protection — turf, sensitive soils, and completed infrastructure are protected from direct load impact

Access definition — mat roads create clearly defined equipment paths that prevent uncontrolled site access

Environmental compliance — mat coverage satisfies permit conditions for soil disturbance and compaction in regulated areas

Ground Protection Matting: Choosing the Right Product

For Primary Heavy Equipment Access (40–80 tons)

Specification: O.G. 4×8 Heavy Duty Mat — 1/2", 81 lbs, 80-ton rating. This is the standard specification for construction equipment access roads, crane pads, oil & gas site access, and industrial staging areas.

For Lighter Equipment and Crew Access (up to 60 tons)

Specification: Tan Lite 4×8 Mat — 3/8", 61 lbs, 60-ton rating. Appropriate for light equipment zones, pedestrian walkways, and applications where crew deployment without mechanical equipment is required.

For Constrained and Narrow Access (up to 80 tons)

Specification: 3×8 Heavy Duty Mat — full 80-ton rating in a 3-foot-wide format. Urban utility corridors, access between structures, narrow right-of-way paths.

For Mixed Equipment and Pedestrian Traffic

Specification: Diamond Marine Mat — dual-surface design with diamond equipment traction on one face and marine-smooth pedestrian-friendly surface on the reverse. Events, mixed-access sites, stadium turf protection.

💡  Matting System Design Rule

Design your matting system for the heaviest load at the softest point in the site. Every other load condition in the project is less demanding than this worst case. Size to the worst case and every other application is automatically over-specified — which is exactly the correct engineering approach.

Ground Mats for Equipment: Quantity Calculation

The most common question after product selection is quantity. Here's the straightforward calculation:

Each 4×8 mat covers 32 sq ft

Single-lane access road (8 ft wide): 2 mats per linear foot of road

Two-lane road (16 ft wide): 4 mats per linear foot

Equipment staging pad: (length ft × width ft) ÷ 32, plus 20% perimeter buffer

Leapfrog deployment (mats moved forward as project advances): use 20–30% of total project coverage in mat inventory
