Ground Mats for Heavy Equipment: Why the Material Underneath Your Machine Matters

When a contractor asks which ground mats for heavy equipment to buy, the question beneath the question is: which material actually works under the loads I'm running? HDPE and rubber both appear in this product category, and the price difference alone doesn't explain the performance difference. This guide does.

What Ground Mats for Heavy Equipment Must Actually Do

A ground mat under heavy equipment has one primary job: distribute the load. A 22-ton excavator on bare soft soil applies 60–80 PSI at its track contact patches. Wet clay fails at 15–20 PSI. Without a mat, the excavator sinks, ruts the ground, and eventually gets stuck.

With a mat, the same load spreads across 32 square feet. Ground pressure drops to 4–7 PSI. The soil holds. This load distribution only works if the mat maintains its flat geometry under load — which is where material selection becomes decisive.

HDPE Ground Mats: Why They Work

Rubber Ground Mats: Where They Fall Short for Heavy Equipment

Rubber ground protection mats are made from vulcanized or recycled rubber — typically reclaimed tire material. For light-duty applications and pedestrian areas, rubber provides acceptable service. For heavy equipment, two material properties create real limitations:

Viscoelastic Creep

Rubber deforms continuously under sustained load — a property called viscoelastic creep. A 25-ton excavator parked on a rubber mat overnight progressively compresses the mat as the rubber flows under constant pressure. By morning, the mat has conformed to the ground surface irregularities beneath it. The flat load-distribution geometry is gone. The mat is now acting as padding, not as a structural load distributor.

Temperature Sensitivity

Rubber ground mats become brittle below approximately −20°F and soft above approximately 130°F surface temperature — easily reached on dark rubber under summer sun. At high temperatures, rubber mats under heavy equipment loads deform permanently rather than elastically.

Rubber ground mat: ~$150–$220 per mat, 3–5 year lifespan in construction use, 30–60 deployment cycles → $2.50–$7/deployment. Blue Gator O.G. 4×8: ~$275, 10+ year lifespan, 100+ deployment cycles → under $3/deployment at year 3. By year 5, rubber has cost more per deployment than HDPE.

 

Selecting Ground Mats for Specific Heavy Equipment

Tracked Excavators

Crawler tracks distribute load better than tires but still require mat coverage for consistent footing and bore angle stability. Cover both tracks with mats extending at least 2 feet beyond the track width on each side. For swing-and-crowd operations, extend coverage to the full 360° swing radius.

Wheeled Equipment — Concrete and Haul Trucks

Loaded concrete and aggregate trucks generate dynamic loads — the impact and vibration of a loaded truck in motion significantly exceeds the static weight. Mat roads under truck routes need to cover the full travel path, not just the heaviest stopping point.

Cranes — Static and Mobile

Crane outrigger loads are the highest point loads in construction. Stack two O.G. 4×8 mats at each outrigger pad for critical lifts. Document the configuration in the lift plan. Under a 100-ton mobile crane at maximum reach, outrigger loads can exceed 200 tons per pad — the stacked mat configuration provides documented structural compliance.

Compactors

Compaction equipment in a fixed area generates cyclic loads that degrade unprotected ground progressively. Mat coverage under compactor operating areas prevents the soil failure that makes compactor passes counterproductive — you're compacting the fill, not the subsoil below it.
