Site managers don't have time for vague guidance on heavy equipment matting. They need to know what to order, what it costs, where it goes, and what happens if it's wrong. This is that reference — specific, practical, and built from what actually happens on construction sites when equipment meets soft ground.

The Load Problem: Why Heavy Equipment Needs Matting

Every soft-ground equipment problem is a pressure problem. Equipment weight divided by tire or track contact area equals ground pressure. Most soft soils fail at 10–25 PSI. Most heavy construction equipment exerts 40–100 PSI at its contact points. The gap between those numbers produces stuck equipment, rutted sites, and delayed projects.

Heavy equipment ground protection mats change the denominator. A 4×8 mat adds 32 square feet to the load-bearing area. The same equipment weight now distributes across a much larger surface — resulting in 3–8 PSI instead of 40–100 PSI. Soft soil that couldn't support the bare tire supports the distributed mat load.

Heavy Equipment Matting: Application by Site Zone

Primary Access Roads

The mat road from site entry to work zone carries every piece of equipment throughout the project. Design to the heaviest single mobilization load — typically the crane or primary excavator. Two parallel 4×8 mats (8 ft total width) is the minimum single-lane specification for equipment access. Stagger mat joints by half a mat length on every row.

Crane and Critical Lift Positions

Crane mat specifications require documentation for lift plan compliance. Stack two O.G. mats at each outrigger pad position for any lift over 50% of rated crane capacity. Document the configuration — mat brand, dimensions, load rating, and stack configuration — in the lift plan. Most crane manufacturers and insurers require this.

Equipment Staging and Overnight Parking

Static overnight loads on unmatted soft ground create progressive settlement. An excavator parked on wet clay overnight can sink enough to require significant effort to extract in the morning — with equipment rental continuing through the delay. Mat staging pads at all overnight positions eliminate this risk at a cost that pays back on the first prevented recovery event.

Active Work Zones

Excavators swing and crowd, compactors make repeated passes, and equipment-in-place generates cyclic loads that degrade ground conditions faster than transit loads. Cover the active work zone footprint plus a 3-foot perimeter beyond the planned equipment swing radius.

Daily rental on a 20-ton excavator: $800–$1,500. Recovery event (crew downtime + delay): 2–4 hours minimum, often half a day. Cost of mat set sufficient to prevent it: amortized to $2–$5 per deployment over the mat's service life. The math isn't close.

 

Soil Conditions and Geotextile Underlayer

Mat performance depends on the soil beneath them. In poor conditions, geotextile fabric installed before mat placement provides the base layer that allows mats to distribute load effectively:

• Firm dry soil: rated mat capacity applies directly

• Wet cohesive soil: geotextile recommended, capacity slightly reduced

• Saturated clay: geotextile required, reduce effective capacity by 25–35%

• Organic/peat: geotextile required, double mat layers at heavy contact points

• Sand: geotextile required for load distribution, anchoring required to prevent mat migration
