Ground Protection Mats for Heavy Equipment: Size, Load, and Selection Guide

Ground Protection Mats for Heavy Equipment: Size, Load, and Selection Guide

Ground Protection Mats for Heavy Equipment: Size, Load, and Selection Guide

Not all heavy equipment is the same — and not all ground protection mats are equal. Matching the right mat to the right equipment and the right ground condition is the difference between a mat road that performs for the life of the project and one that fails under the first loaded pass. This guide walks through the selection process step by step.

Step 1: Know Your Equipment Weight

Ground protection mat selection starts with the heaviest piece of equipment on site. Everything else can use the same mats, but the size and load rating is determined by the worst case. Here are common equipment weights to benchmark against:

Mini excavator (Kubota U55, CAT 305): 5–6 tons — 4×8 Lite Mat (60 ton) provides ample margin

       Mid-size excavator (CAT 320, Komatsu PC200): 20–22 tons — O.G. 4×8 Mat (80 ton) specified

Large excavator (CAT 390): 90+ tons — mat grid / stacked configuration required

Concrete truck (fully loaded): 30–35 tons — O.G. 4×8 Mat specified

       Articulated dump truck (CAT 730): 45–50 tons — O.G. 4×8 Mat specified

Crawler crane (100-ton class): 80–100 tons — mat grid under crawler pads

Mobile crane (Grove GMK5150): 60–80 tons — O.G. 4×8 or stacked configuration at outriggers

⚠️  Weight Rating Caveat

Published mat load ratings assume representative soil conditions. In saturated or organic soils, effective capacity is lower. Add geotextile underlayer in poor soil conditions and consider conservative mat rating (plan to the Lite Mat capacity, even when using O.G. mats) in uncertain ground conditions.

Step 2: Choose the Right Mat Size

4×8 O.G. Original Mat — The Industry Standard

The 4×8 O.G. Ground Protection Mat at 1/2" thickness and 81 lbs is the specification for primary equipment access roads, staging areas, and crane pads. 32 sq ft of coverage per mat, available in black, white/natural, and tan.

4×8 Lite Mat — Lighter Handling, Serious Coverage

The Tan Lite 4×8 Mat at 3/8" thickness and 61 lbs trades the top 20 tons of load capacity for meaningful crew handling ease. For sites where the heaviest equipment is in the 40–60 ton range and crew deployment without mechanical assist is required, the Lite is the correct choice.

3×8 Mat — Constrained Access

The 3×8 Heavy Duty Mat provides 24 sq ft of coverage in a narrower format. For urban utility access, equipment corridors between structures, or any situation where a 4-foot-wide mat can't be positioned, the 3×8 maintains the 80-ton load rating in a more maneuverable format.

Diamond Marine Mat — Mixed Traffic

The Diamond Marine Mat (4×8, 1/2", 81 lbs, 80-ton) has a dual-surface design — diamond tread for equipment traction on one side, marine-smooth for pedestrian-friendly or turf-adjacent applications on the reverse. For sites with both equipment access and crew walkways, this mat eliminates the need to manage two separate mat inventories.

Step 3: Calculate Quantity

A standard single-lane equipment access road (8 feet wide) uses two mats per lane-foot of length. A 200-foot access road requires 400 linear feet of mat — 100 mats for a single lane, 200 for two lanes. Staging areas are calculated by total square footage divided by 32 (the coverage per 4×8 mat), plus 15–20% for perimeter waste and corner overlaps.

For a leapfrog deployment (mats recovered from behind and relaid ahead as work progresses), calculate for the active working length rather than the total project length — typically 20–30% of total project length in mat inventory.

Step 4: Factor Ground Conditions

Firm dry ground: any mat at its rated capacity

Wet but cohesive soil: rated capacity, geotextile recommended

Saturated clay: reduce effective capacity by 30–40%, geotextile required

Organic / peat: reduce effective capacity by 50%+, geotextile required, consider stacked mats

Sand: geotextile required, anchoring required — HDPE maintains traction rubber does not
